Feeling like it’s been awhile since I’ve really shot for myself, I went feature hunting at Magic Island. (This place is awesome for feature hunting btw.) Some strange weather we’ve been having lately…it seems like there’s a pattern to it all. One day it’ll be overcast and rainy, the next it’ll be super clear; blue skies as far as the eye could see. This was one of those days…

…well almost.

I was out and about looking for features…or wild art…as it neared golden hour. Problem was that the clouds started to creep towards the sun as it was setting. I walked along the path of Magic Island looking for features as i went. There was some nice light filtering throught the trees and clouds, but nothing breath taking. I did come across a pair fishing off of the south-western most edge of Magic Island. What a strange coincidence. It turned out to be people i had made a photo up a year earlier while interning for the Honolulu Advertiser. (Photo on the right is from last year)

LEFT: Dayne Uyehara and Dayna Tamashiro fish off of Magic Island on July 17, 2010.
I continued to look for features, and after awhile made my way back towards where i started i knelt down to snag a shot of people walking by coconut trees, when I hear a guy go “eh, brah…what you taking a pickcha of?!” i look and who is it? Marco!

At one point we became co-workers…but then somethings happened and we both no longer worked there…

one day outta the blue, he called me. “KENT! I’m getting married! Can you do some engagement photos of Bree and myself??” I replied…like always…. “SURE!!!”

Geena was a tremendous help. I don’t know what I would’ve done without her there with me. We shot at two locations. Judd Trail and Sand Island. Geena graciously helped carry my lighting gear around the place as we went throughout the shoot.

A quick click of the shutter. Triggered via a Pocketwizard Plus II, hooked up to my D300 via a drive cable. Dan Nakaso, who’s on the City Desk today asked if i could find some Weather Art…Wild art or Feature art with the weather in mind. After making four frames that I really liked, i decided to fool around with some of the toys that I have. Pocketwizards and off camera flash.

My camera remote. Setup along Coral Street right in front of the big puddle. (KENT NISHIMURA/The Honolulu Advertiser)

I setup a remote camera fronting the puddle and decided to trigger the camera with a pocketwizard, and used the Nikon Creative Light System(CLS) to trigger the SB-800 i was holding in my hand. The Nikon CLS is definitely worlds ahead of the Canon ETTL system.

Working at the Atherton YMCA, I have met many people, some of which I have shared laughs, serious moments, and disagreements with. Some of them, stand out in my mind among the rest…two of those people asked me to be apart of their graduation from college. Ashleigh and Martin asked if I could shoot portraits of them, celebrating their graduating from College. Well Ashleigh would be receiving her Master’s Degree, and Martin would be receiving his Bachelor’s degree.

Congrats to you both and everyone else that graduated. Best of luck to all of your future endeavors! Aloha!
